Description
NEWCOMB COLLEGE ART POTTERY BY MASTER ARTISAN JOSEPH MEYER/ HENRIETTA DAVIDSON.Joseph Meyer; master artisan who was responsible for throwing this pitcher on a pottery wheel, he completed 30 years of creating pieces for students and staff to decorate.
Henrietta Davison Bailey; the collaborating associate who finished the pitcher with a red copper reduction glaze over a buff clay and it is believed to be the only red copper reduction glaze used on any of the Newcomb college pottery pieces making it a very, very rare one off piece.
The glaze which each distinctive pottery of the country has developed is particular into itself, worked out of a union of chemical theory and practice it is impossible to duplication elsewhere except when the exact conditions can also be duplicated. Hence each successful glaze is something to be studied and admired. The ceramic chemist at Newcomb (Henrietta D. Bailey- decorator ) has been particularly successful in the standard glaze which characterizes this ware. It is a semi transparent Matte glaze, through which the under paining above reference to, appears through a morning mist! Spectacular
The sources from which the designs are drawn, the original viewpoint of the artist, the exceptional skill which shapes the wear, The scientific knowledge and patent research which produces the glaze all conspire to render their wear unique in the full sense of those overworked words. Collectors of distinctive American pottery should bear this in mind. A museum quality Jewel!
Great provenance………
The pitcher came from the personal collection of Katherine Ricks~Newcomb college graduate and instructor. Katherine knew what she had and that’s why remained in her personal collection for so long, I appreciate her estate releasing it so that it may one day end up in a museum.
The pitcher measures 6 inches high by 4 inches in diameter. No chips cracks or repairs.
