Coin History
The Liberty Cap is the third and final large Cent type struck by the United States Mint during 1793 in its attempt to stay public criticism over the obverse portrait. The coins struck from September of that year through January 1794 display Joseph Wright's interpretation of Liberty as depicted on Augustin Dupre's famous Libertas Americana medal. Before the Liberty Cap series ended in 1796, Robert Scot and John Smith Gardner would also create their own renditions of this basic design.
This series includes many popular, and several rare varieties. Assembling a complete set of all known die marriages is certainly one way to approach the subject of collecting Liberty Cap Cents, but it is a formidable task due to numerous "stoppers." Many numismatists elect to pursue this series by date, acquiring one example from each year in which these coins were struck (1793-1796). Still other collectors, and many investors, are content to simply acquire one example to represent the type. This can be a challenging, yet very rewarding task given the rarity of high-grade, problem-free Liberty Cap Cents in the rare coin market.
